I had always wanted to visit Antwerp, a city full of charm, history, and modernity. So, one day, I packed my backpack and set off with curiosity in my heart. If you’re thinking of visiting Antwerp alone, here’s my experience and some useful tips that might help you on your journey.

How to Get to Antwerp

Getting to Antwerp is quite simple. I chose to take the train from Brussels, which takes about 40 minutes. The Antwerp Central Station is one of the main attractions in itself, not only for its stunning architecture but also for its convenience. From the station, it’s easy to get around the city thanks to efficient public transportation or by just walking.

If you’re arriving by plane, you can land at Brussels Airport and take a direct train or bus to Antwerp. Once in the city, getting around is easy with trams, buses, or by renting a bike. Personally, I walked a lot: Antwerp is an ideal city for those who love to explore on foot.

Where to Stay in Antwerp

Traveling alone, I opted for a small hostel in the heart of Antwerp, close to the historic district. I loved the friendly atmosphere and the opportunity to meet other travelers. If you prefer something quieter, there are plenty of hotels and B&Bs at affordable prices, especially in the Zuid and Eilandje neighborhoods. These areas are a bit further from the tourist crowds but are well connected and offer a more relaxed vibe.

What to See in Antwerp

One of my first stops was the Plantin-Moretus Museum, a fascinating place for anyone who loves history and printing. Walking through the streets of the city center, I reached the Cathedral of Our Lady, home to several works by Rubens, an artist closely connected to the city.

I also strolled along the Scheldt River, where I took some time to reflect and enjoy the urban landscape. You can take a long walk here or sit down at one of the many cafés with a view of the river.

Another neighborhood that stood out to me was Zuid, Antwerp’s artsy district, full of galleries and trendy cafés. If you’re into contemporary art, the Museum of Contemporary Art (M HKA) is a must-see. For fans of modern architecture, don’t miss the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS), a stunning building with a panoramic view from the rooftop terrace.

What to Eat in Antwerp

When it comes to food, Antwerp has plenty to offer. I tried the traditional stoofvlees with fries, a Belgian dish of beef stew cooked in beer. The waffles and Belgian chocolate are also a must. There are many small restaurants and food stalls around the city where you can enjoy these local treats without breaking the bank.

If you prefer international cuisine, Antwerp has a broad selection of that, too: Italian, Asian, South American—you name it. I found a small Japanese restaurant near my hostel where I had some really good sushi at a reasonable price.

How to Get Around Antwerp Alone

Getting around Antwerp solo is easy and safe. The city is well-marked, and people are friendly and willing to give directions. One of the things I appreciated most was the sense of security, even when walking around the city center at night. Of course, like any big city, it’s always good to be cautious, but overall, I felt very comfortable.

If you enjoy cycling, you can rent a bike to explore the city. There are plenty of bike lanes, and the traffic isn’t too hectic, making cycling a great option for solo travelers.

Useful Tips for Visiting Antwerp Alone

  • Plan your itinerary: While Antwerp is a city that’s perfect for spontaneous exploration, having a list of places to visit can help ensure you don’t miss anything important.
  • Use an offline map: If you don’t want to rely on Wi-Fi or mobile data, download an offline map of the city. Google Maps allows you to do this, and I found it very helpful.
  • Choose your accommodation wisely: If you’re traveling solo, I recommend staying in a central location. This will allow you to explore the city on foot and have everything within easy reach.
  • Talk to locals: Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek advice from the locals. They often know less touristy, more authentic spots, and are always ready to help.

My Final Thoughts on Antwerp

Visiting Antwerp solo was a fantastic experience. The city offers so much, both culturally and gastronomically, and it’s easy to explore even when traveling alone. If you love cities that blend history and modernity with a welcoming and safe atmosphere, Antwerp is the perfect destination for you.
