Traveling alone is always a unique experience, and Rotterdam turned out to be the perfect choice for my trip. This modern and vibrant city in the Netherlands offered me a mix of futuristic architecture, fascinating history, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere that captivated me from the very first moment.
Arriving in Rotterdam: my first impression
I arrived in Rotterdam by train from Amsterdam, a short and comfortable journey that gave me the chance to admire the Dutch landscapes. The first thing that struck me upon arrival was the Rotterdam Central Station, a masterpiece of modern design. From here, it’s easy to reach the city center on foot or by public transport, but I chose to walk to start exploring right away.
Exploring rotterdam’s architecture
One of the features that make Rotterdam unique is its modern architecture. After being almost completely destroyed during World War II, the city was rebuilt with an eye toward the future. I visited the Erasmus Bridge, also known as “The Swan,” one of the city’s icons, and was fascinated by the skyscrapers that rise along the Maas River.
I couldn’t resist the temptation to visit the Cube Houses, an extraordinary example of innovative architecture. These tilted houses, designed by Piet Blom, are a true symbol of Rotterdam and perfect for a photo souvenir. I even visited one of these houses, which is open to the public, to see how the interior spaces are organized.
What to see in Rotterdam: museums and urban art
For art and culture lovers, Rotterdam is a true paradise. The Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum is a must-visit, with a collection that spans from Dutch masters to contemporary art. But that’s not all: walking through the streets, I discovered that urban art is everywhere. Painted walls, sculptures, and art installations make every corner of the city a visual experience.
Rotterdam solo: safety and convenience
Traveling alone in Rotterdam was extremely easy and safe. The city is well-connected with an efficient network of public transportation, including trams, buses, and a modern metro. I found it easy to get around, and if I ever had doubts, the locals were always ready to help with a smile.
Rotterdam is also a multicultural city, and this is reflected in the wide range of restaurants and cafes. I tried cuisines from all over the world but also enjoyed traditional Dutch dishes like “bitterballen” in one of the many bars along the harbor.
Useful tips for solo travelers in Rotterdam

- Accommodation: Rotterdam offers a wide range of accommodations, from budget hostels to luxury hotels. I chose a hotel close to the center to always be near the main attractions.
- Safety: The city is very safe, even at night. However, like in any big city, it’s always best to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places.
- Language: Most people speak English, so it’s easy to communicate everywhere.
My trip to Rotterdam was a memorable experience. I explored the city on foot, discovered its incredible modern architecture, visited museums and galleries, and enjoyed its rich gastronomic offerings. Rotterdam is a city full of surprises and well worth visiting, especially if you’re traveling solo. Safe, welcoming, and full of life, it’s an ideal destination for anyone looking to explore a modern and dynamic city.
